I believe traffic is the central life of a blog. Without it, a blog is idle or dead.

I'm going to have to disagree a bit with this post. The key is "targeted traffic" as simply traffic in general will not necessarily convert to sales or adsense clicks. So really, trying to increase traffic for the sake of it is just wasting time. What people should be doing is getting quality targeted traffic, people that actually want to read about whatever niche you are in.

The best traffic to have is search engine traffic, NOT social networking traffic like stumbleupon, digg, or even entrecard, these visitors simply will not make you money.

Search engine traffic is the best because people are actually looking for your content, they already want what you have to offer, rather than you trying to pitch some random passersby. So, in this case, what people should really be doing is quality links back to their blog to increase their rankings in the search engines.

I see tons of these entrecard sites getting up to 500 uniques a day and they aren't making a single cent in money. Yet I know some SEO people who only get search engine traffic with the same amount of unique visitors and are making $1,000 per month!

You should really read this blog if you want to understand it more:

I've been using Entrecard like crazy lately and it has gotten me some decent traffic, nothing to rave about but I'm still pleased with the results so far.

That being said, I hope that the traffic comes from Entrecard sticks around because they love my content!

I totally agree with you that contests bring traffic, specially when prize is so high as 20k EC credits. But what brings constant traffic is good content, everything else is strictly temporary. I have monthly contest going on where I give away 1k ec credits and link back from home page (PR3) and it works ok for me, but I try to write posts that could benefit my readers so they come back often.
